Hi, I'm Joe. Welcome to Farr East. I am glad you are here!
I was born in Tokyo. When I was five, my family moved abroad, and I grew up far from the city I came from. Years later, after finishing school, my brother Leo and I moved back. Coming home as an adult, I fell for Tokyo all over again, and this time I really understood it: the neighborhoods, the food, the small daily rituals that make life here what it is. I rediscovered my culture, my city, and my country, and I haven't stopped exploring since.
That's part of why what happened next bothered me so much.
In 2022, I got a call from friends traveling in Tokyo. They were not happy. Every restaurant had a 90-minute wait. Every temple was packed. Every spot they'd saved from Instagram looked nothing like what they were standing in front of. They'd done everything right: months of planning, every YouTube video watched, every travel account followed. And they were still stuck in line, overpaying, and watching their trip slip away one wasted hour at a time.
I knew exactly why.
Most Japan travel content is made by creators who've visited once or twice. They show you Shibuya Crossing and Ichiran Ramen because that's what gets views, not because it's the best Japan has to offer. They're not locals. They don't know what they're sending you into. And when your trip falls flat, they've already moved on to the next video.
Leo and I knew the Japan those trips were missing. The neighborhood restaurants with no English menu and a line of regulars. The temples that stay quiet if you know when to go. The small places that never trend, because the people who love them don't make videos for a living.
So we decided to build the opposite.
We spent months talking to locals and going through Japanese food blogs and forums, then personally tested every recommendation before it made the cut. No tourist traps. No overhyped spots. Only the places worth your time.
That's how Farr East was born. Two brothers, guides built on real local knowledge, and one simple promise: we want you to experience the Japan most travelers miss, and to spend your time here on what matters to you, not on whatever happened to go viral.
If that's the trip you're after, we'd love to help you plan it.
Joe (and my brother Leo)
